Laura maxey

Trained as a scenic artist for theatre and film, Laura Maxey continues to explore the graphic language of signage and the urban landscape via the acrylic medium. Influenced by Jack Kerouac and other American icons who spent time "On The Road", her paintings are bold and direct. They speak to a longing for the vanishing landscape of American roadside attractions and the art of traditional sign painting and billboards.

There is an essential loneliness about the work: a passerby on a darkened street, looking in a lighted window, or a neon sign glimpsed from a speeding car. Emotion and evocation is as important to the subject matter captured as color and line. The work is meant to evoke an emotional response in the viewer, a sense of déjà vu or a wish to have been present when the scene was captured.

Laura Maxey is a graduate of both Bennington College (BA) and New York University (MFA). Her work is part of private collections and has been exhibited at the Society of Bluffton Artists, as well as retail galleries in the SC Lowcountry.
